We’re sure every creator remembers their first real project—we certainly remember ours!
We weren't even ‘The Meyers’ yet…let alone ‘MeyerWorks.’ It was just a couple months before our wedding, each of us were staying with our parents in our hometown for the summer before heading back for our senior year of college when we decided to make a log bed as our wedding gift to each other. No real pre-planning…more like a spur of the moment decision.I mean, what could possibly go wrong!? We both had summer jobs to keep us busy during the week, not much ‘free’ time to speak of, a wedding to get ready for, no tools to our name, no logs, no idea where we'd source the logs we needed, no shop to work in, and no experience building furniture! We had only the idea of what we wanted to do, a tiny picture clipped out of a catalog for a design concept, and complete confidence in each other that we would pull it off! And indeed we did! In fact, we’re still using the same log bed nearly 25 years later.
But we’re getting ahead of ourselves…let’s back up a bit. Once we decided we were in fact building a log bed, we got to work planning. We decided to source logs from the local national forest…so we cut the log poles after work one evening. We peeled each one by hand, with a draw knife we borrowed, and then let them dry. With each step we were blessed with friends and family that allowed us to borrow tools, use shop space, and brainstorm techniques for building a quality product that would last over time. Our log bed was built over the course of that summer and we had it finished just in time to move it into our first apartment. We had a couple things pop up that we needed to remedy, but somehow we pulled it off without any major hiccups. It was kind of amazing really!
Looking back at our furniture building experience at the time (zilch) and our spur of the moment decision to build a log bed…it was truly amazing we were successful. The bed was square, level, stayed together when someone sat on it…AND it looked just like the tiny little picture we cut out of the catalog. Whoop! Whoop! SUCCESS! What was even more amazing was the fact we didn’t have any fights while building our bed. In fact, we worked great together. Our parents still joke about how we put our relationship to the test before we were married…and that after watching us build the bed they weren’t worried about our marriage surviving. If we could plan a wedding, work full-time, get ready to go back to college, and build a bed from scratch…without major fights…then we could survive whatever life would throw at us! Perhaps we should put on a bed-building workshop for newly engaged couples…it could like be a marriage counseling retreat?! Maybe not.
Maybe we’ll just stick to what we know…building unique rustic furniture and home decor!
